This exhibition presents the work of two contemporary artists whose distinct practices are united by a profound engagement with material, process, and the transformative power of making. Through sculpture and painting, Hannah Lane and Kathy Little explore the ways in which surfaces retain memory, gestures embody experience, and natural materials become vessels for reflection.
Award-winning wood and paper artist Hannah Lane creates tactile, sculptural works using two materials that share a common origin: wood and paper. Employing traditional woodworking techniques, Lane transforms discarded books and paper into solid forms by layering, compressing and carving them into bespoke sculptures. The resulting works reveal intricate patterns that echo the grain of timber while exposing the invisible traces of the artist’s hand. By extending the life of materials once considered fleeting, Lane’s practice becomes a poetic meditation on sustainability, resilience, and the enduring memories held within everyday objects.
In contrast yet in conversation, Kathy Little’s expressive landscapes evoke the shifting rhythms and atmospheres of the natural world through animated brushwork, incised drawing, and richly textured paint. Fluid, airy passages sit alongside dense, tactile surfaces, creating compositions that balance delicacy with permanence. Her paintings remain visibly alive with the energy of their making; drawn lines carved into wet paint intersect with vigorous gestures and generous brushstrokes, revealing a compelling dialogue between structure and spontaneity.
Although working in different media, Lane and Little share a sensitivity to process that allows the physical act of making to remain central to each work. Both artists invite close looking, encouraging viewers to experience the layered histories embedded within materials and surfaces. Whether carved from compressed paper or built through accumulations of paint, each piece speaks of transformation, endurance and the quiet beauty found in the passage of time.
Material Echoes celebrates the tactile language of contemporary art, bringing together sculpture and painting in a thoughtful exploration of memory, landscape, and materiality. Together, Lane and Little reveal how acts of making can preserve traces of the past while opening new ways of seeing the world around us.
