FROM WASTE TO WONDER
A compelling exhibition featuring the work of sculptor Hannah Lane and painter Sophie Capron.
4th – 28th February

We are delighted to present From Waste to Wonder, a compelling exhibition featuring the work of sculptor Hannah Lane and painter Sophie Capron. United by a shared fascination with the passage of time, the traces of human intervention, and the repurposing of materials, Lane and Capron explore how transformation imbues everyday matter with new meaning and beauty.
Hannah Lane, an award-winning wood and paper artist, employs traditional woodworking techniques to create tactile, bespoke sculptures from two materials that originate in the same source: wood and paper. Through her meticulous process, discarded books and paper are layered, compressed, and transformed into solid blocks, which are then carved and shaped. The resulting works reveal the invisible imprint of the artist’s hand, echoing wood grain in paper and extending the lifespan of materials once considered ephemeral. Lane’s sculptures honour both longevity and impermanence, offering a poetic meditation on reuse, resilience, and material memory.
Sophie Capron’s richly textured paintings resonate with a complementary philosophy. Through layers of paint, marks, scratches, and abrasions, she traces the subtle yet persistent impact of human presence on the environment. Her surfaces evoke weathered walls, peeling plaster, and crumbling ruins – spaces where time and intervention have left their mark. In Capron’s work, what may appear as erosion or decay becomes a source of richness and beauty, a contemporary interpretation of the Romantic fascination with the sublime in abandoned places. Her abstract forms suggest natural growth, universal symbols, and perpetual transformation, capturing a sense of evolution rather than finality.
Together, Lane and Capron offer a unique dialogue between sculpture and painting. Lane’s hand-shaped, material-driven sculptures meet Capron’s painterly, process-oriented canvases in a shared exploration of impermanence, renewal, and the artistry inherent in reuse. Both artists elevate discarded and overlooked materials, demonstrating how human intervention, whether through handwork, mark-making, or layering, can reveal hidden beauty and sustain the life of materials and ideas alike.
From Waste to Wonder invites visitors to witness the poetic possibilities of transformation and the complementary ways painting and sculpture can engage in a conversation about materiality, time, and renewal.
