Artwave West is thrilled to announce Evolving Dimensions: The Sculptural Works of Louise Plant, an exhibition that presents the exceptional artistry and technical prowess of acclaimed sculptor Louise Plant. Best known for her mastery of form and the seamless surfaces of her works, Plant’s sculptures go far beyond mere aesthetic perfection. Beneath their impeccable finish lies a deep mathematical and conceptual rigor, illuminating her profound exploration of nature’s underlying movements.

At first glance, the pieces captivate with their elegant, balanced structures. However, as one engages more closely with the works, the complexity embedded within them becomes apparent. Each sculpture—whether hewn from marble, shaped from limestone or even constructed from steel—bears witness to Plant’s meticulous study of natural movement and symmetry.

Recent works like Hare of the Sea and Confessori exemplify Plant’s dedication to capturing the subtleties of motion in the natural world. Inspired by the ebb and flow of water, these pieces emerge from detailed underwater investigations and photographic studies that reveal the delicate balance inherent in fluidity. The sculptures, in turn, embody this equilibrium, where smooth, graceful curves hint at both the organic chaos and the symmetry found in nature’s endless transformations.

By juxtaposing the immense solidity of marble with the fleeting, ephemeral qualities of water, Plant’s work transcends traditional boundaries. Her ability to manipulate unforgiving materials into shapes that evoke movement and fluidity creates a powerful visual paradox, one that invites viewers to contemplate the relationship between the solid and the transient.

Evolving Dimensions provides an immersive experience into Plant’s artistic universe, where science, mathematics, and nature coalesce into sculptural expressions of profound beauty. Visitors will encounter an artist who is not only a master of her craft but a thinker and observer deeply attuned to the rhythms of the natural world.

About the Artist:

Louise Plant is an Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors, whose work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally. Awards include Artist of the Year Award from the Arts Council of England in 2000, the Brian Mercer Marble Scholarship, Studio Sem, Italy, 2007 and the Swedish KKV Bohuslän Scholarship in 2014. Commissioners include the RNIB, MOD, Waldorf Astoria, and Durham County Council. Her most recent public siting is at 1 New Park Square in the new cultural quarter taking place at Edinburgh Park.

Her fascination with the mathematics of form and movement informs her unique approach to sculpture, often pushing the boundaries of what is possible with stone and marble. Through rigorous study and experimentation, she creates pieces that reflect the beauty, balance, and complexity of nature. Additionally, in developing the Parkour series, Louise has begun to make this strong urban inspired work in marble, highlighting the material’s capacity to infuse light drawn from a dense city skyline.
