ENDURING FORMS
Featuring Martin Goold PS and Dr Helen Slater
7th – 28th March

Oil pastel and pencil, 42x54cm in 65x77cm frame.
Artwave West is delighted to present a dynamic dual exhibition featuring acclaimed British artist Martin Goold PS and distinguished glass sculptor Dr Helen Slater. This show brings together two contrasting practices that both engage deeply with place, memory and the way we perceive the world around us, each through their unique visual language and material.
Goold’s latest works in oil pastel and wax pencil are inspired by the historic architecture and elemental landscapes of Cornwall. Across a series of evocative studies, he explores three iconic locations:
Botallack, West Cornwall
Here, the rugged remnants of coastal structures stand against the Atlantic winds, their weathered stone and stark forms a testament to the enduring dialogue between human endeavour and nature.
St Michael’s Mount
The ancient castle and clustered buildings rising from rock and sea become focal points for Goold’s sensitive observation of light, atmosphere and structure.
Wheal Coates, North Cornwall
The silhouetted engine house at Wheal Coates provides a striking contrast against shifting skies and surf, its geometric presence articulated with care and precision.
Across these works, Goold’s mastery of pastel and pencil brings out the textures of stone, the weight of history, and the rhythm of place, anchoring architecture within landscape in compositions that invite reflection and connection.
In contrast to Goold’s drawn surfaces, Helen Slater’s glass sculptures offer a luminous, ethereal counterpoint. Working in kiln-formed and cast glass, Slater creates atmospheric forms in which fragments of landscape, memory and place seem to float within transparent, refractive surfaces.
Her work explores how glass can capture and transform impressions of environment and space, inviting the viewer to engage with shifting light, depth and perception. Using the intrinsic qualities of glass – reflection, distortion, luminosity – Slater’s pieces evoke delicate visions of fields, trees and paths, lingering like memories suspended in time.
Together, the works of Goold and Slater create a rich visual conversation – between the solidity of stone and the transparency of glass, between the permanence of architecture and the ephemeral qualities of light and memory.
