Boo Mallinson’s paintings are inspired by her Dorset surroundings and are compelling evocations of her sense of being within the landscape. They bring together feelings and experiences triggered by observations of the terrain, and are personal expressions of an encounter with the elemental.

A euphoria about being in these places is expressed in the exuberance of the painting action. Location drawings develop organically into larger studio paintings in a process that constantly assesses the balance between the considered and the accidental. Working in the area between abstract and representational, Mallinson creates deeply expressive atmospheres and moods with paint.

A flow of painterly gestures occurs: bleeding, running and dripping of paint, smearing and manipulating with cloths, hands and brushes. Paint is sometimes left thin and transparent, and other times working and re-working the surface creates rich textures. Open passages of almost minimal surface are allowed to breath space into the composition, setting off the more complex intensified sections.

She is repeatedly drawn to the ambiguity of the horizon line, here the viewer focuses most profoundly on establishing their own foothold on the landscape.

Following extensive and inspirational travels in Africa and Asia between 1990 and 1994, Mallinson attended Byam Shaw School of Art and City and Guilds School of Art until 1996. In 2002 she moved with her family to Dorset from London. In 2004 she had her first solo exhibition at Daniel Hunt Fine Art, London. She has exhibited in group exhibitions at Arndean Gallery, London, and in galleries, art centres and open studio events across Dorset and Devon.
