Kathy Ramsay Carr

Kathy Ramsay Carr composes evocative landscapes and seascapes from fragments of memory and emotional responses to places. Her paintings express a desire to journey through the terrain, to explore and discover, to extend known boundaries; a sense of elevated viewpoint as if from flight is often present and horizons are rarely fixed, instead they melt into unending distance.

She is particularly drawn to the powerful coastlines of Cornwall and Devon, and the solitary openness of Dartmoor, walking in these places alone her imagination is stirred. She prefers quiet reflection to making location sketches or taking photographs; this allows her to become absorbed in the ambience of the place that later becomes the motivation behind the studio work.

Titles such as ‘Romance’ or ‘Between Ourselves’ are suggestive of an accompanying poetry, personal references or recollections from the more distant past, another lyricism that has become infused in her vision of the landscape,

Ramsay Carr works in a complex and varied way; using palette knives and large brushes to make expressive gestural marks, scraping off and re-applying paint to build texture, glazing with thin layers of oil to produce a delicate translucency. In paintings of great richness a profound and moving vision of the landscape emerges.

Ramsay Carr spent most of her childhood in British Columbia and has travelled and lived abroad for long periods. She trained at Bath Academy of Art before living in Mexico City, holding the post of Head of Design at the National University of Mexico. She returned to the UK in 1984 having started a family and now lives in Devon working as a professional artist. She has an extensive exhibiting profile including galleries in London where she has exhibited at Trion Gallery Cork Street, Cardiff at Martin Tinney Gallery, Oxford at Inspires Gallery, the South West where she has held solo exhibitions at Brownston Gallery in Devon, and numerous UK and overseas art fairs. Her work is held in several corporate collections.
